Problem: In automotive NPD, teams working backward from build dates postpone starting lower-work tasks, treating schedule slack as free time. This local decision-making causes late design releases, overloads shared downstream teams, and consumes slack across non-critical paths.   Solution: Establish a shared global priority system that requires every team to execute projects in the exact same sequence regardless of local workload or build dates. Daily task execution is then guided by this common priority, reserving critical path analysis purely for high-level diagnostic health checks.   Benefits: Aligning execution to a global priority prevents workload surges and protects shared downstream resources from bottlenecking. Preserving schedule slack keeps project risk predictable and prevents builds from being delayed by late component releases.
